From online lessons to virtual laboratories, up to exams: the Taliercio.2020 (T.2020) project is a new digital learning system that allows students to follow many teaching-related activities from their PCs, immersing themselves in a new virtual environment which offers all the software and tools necessary for learning.

Within the School of Engineering, the number of courses that make use of computer laboratories is constantly increasing and with them, therefore, also the number of students. To improve teaching, the T.2020 project extends IT classrooms both spatially – allowing them to be used remotely (at home or in traditional classrooms) – and temporally, i.e. outside the canonical opening hours of the laboratories. This project does not aim to replace computer rooms, but to extend their use.

The T.2020 project makes all teaching spaces a large virtual computer “system”, favoring multimedia and inclusive teaching, which favors the improvement of university life and the reduction of drop-outs. In fact, to access the virtual environment, you can use your own computer, according to the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) principle. To promote the project and make it usable for students without a computer, the School of Engineering in 2020 purchased 133 laptops that were then given to students on loan, charging a small deposit. Computers that are returned at the end of the course of study can be reassigned to new applicants.

A student’s PC will not run the software, but will display the remote session. The remote environment will therefore offer computing power and an environment already installed and customized, depending on the course of study.

With this project, the School of Engineering is ready to face the next few years in light of the changes that university teaching is already undergoing.
